A comparatively large, powerful feline, the fishing cat is possibly the most
aquatic of the ‘small cats’. Brown-grey in colour, it can be seen
in grassy swamps, reed beds, rivers and tidal creeks as it searches for prey
which may include fish, crabs, birds, and small mammals. Reports suggest that
fishing cats can even take the ocassional dog and attacks on human infants are
not unheard. This feline’s fishing strategy involves swatting’ fish
or molluses from out of the water, in preference to immersing itself. Conservationists
look upon the presence of fishing cats as an excellent indication of the health
of wetland habitats.
