MACKINAW CITY, where Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park highlights the area’s
importance as a lumber supplier through interpretive reconstructions of the
18th-century water-powered saw mill while the new Forest Canopy Bridge crossing,
Eagle’s Flight Zip Line adventure and Nature
Trail Climbing Wall ensure thrills as well as scenic splendour. You should also
visit Colonial Fort Michilimackinac and its neighbouring Old Mackinac Point
Lighthouse.
After crossing mighty Mackinaw Bridge, you journey into Michigan’s Upper
Peninsula and TAHQUAMENON FALLS STATE PARK. Immortalised in Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow’s ‘Song of Hiawatha,’ nature’s grandeur takes
centre stage here. Choose a guided hike or set off on your own, splashing in
the Lower Falls, then trekking up-river for a view of the tannin-stained Upper
Falls, former Ojibwa hunting and fishing grounds and a spectacular visual treat.
Thirsty hikers should seek out Camp 33, the gift shop and brew-pub at the Upper
Falls!
