This year Meghalaya, like other places in the world, is focusing on the role of tourism in addressing climate change concerns and conserving the biosphere. As part of this commitment, the state government is giving a special thrust to eco-tourism to protect nature and ensure sustainable livelihoods. It is exploring the potential of various natural and cultural sites as tourist destinations and the involvement of communities living within and around these in their promotion and conservation.

Tourism is a useful tool for conservation of critical landscapes, wildlife, biodiversity and saving threatened flora and fauna. At the same time, it can play a significant role in creating jobs, raising family income and thereby removing poverty. Studies have proved that many of the community-managed tourism projects, based on holistic social, ecological and cultural objectives, have opened up avenues for not only sustainable livelihoods and income but also for promotion of local culture and cuisine, art and artefacts, handloom and handicrafts.

Meghalaya is developing three such model sites with community participation and stake. Each of these projects is being run by the three main tribal communities - Jaintias, Garos and Khasis.

Meghalaya receives over 4,00,000 domestic tourists and about 5,000 foreign visitors every year. With innovative eco-tourism plans, the state hopes to increase the tourist inflow manifold.
