Sasatgre, nestled in the foothills of the picturesque Nokrek biosphere reserve
in the West Garo hills, is another eco-tourism site that attracts visitors from
both home and abroad. It is one of the half-dozen villages which is famous for
its sweet juicy oranges, located close to the hill range. Citrus Indica, locally
called memang narang, is endemic to this place. Besides all major rivers originate
from the Nokrek range, and therefore, we need to conserve the watershed.
The community protects the forest reserve, particularly the stretch that is home
of the Selbagre Hoolock Gibbon. The Gams never kill or hunt the Hoolock, locally
known as huru. They have a traditional belief that if it is killed, a famine or
a curse would befall in the village. On this circuit, another location is the
Songkalwaii where the community has kept a fish reserve on the bank of the Simsang
river. Next is the Rongbang. where beautiful waterfalls stop every traveller.
Locals ensure that the water doesn't do up. They are so hospitable that you would
probably have to drop in at every village home.
