HILL TRIBES: FADING CULTURES - Thailand
Over the last two centuries the valleys in the north have been settled and cultivated by semi-nomadic hill tribes people who have migrated to Thailand from Tibet, Myanmar, China and Laos. These people have their own language, customs, mode of dress and belief systems. Treks to visit these cultural groups have become a major tourist attraction. Although their clothing is exotic and colourful, most hill tribes are a far cry from the idyllic forest communities that most tourists expect. The people are extremely poor and usually live in wooden shacks without running water. The land around the villages is often deforested and eroded. Opium addiction is a major problem and so is illiteracy and disease. This said, visiting these villages is a unique experience, especially if you go with a good guide who can interpret conversations and help with cultural interaction.
YOUR NORTHERN BASE
Most northern adventures — whether they’re hill tribe treks, river trips or mountain bike expeditions — start in Chiang Mai, the region’s capital. This is probably the most liveable city in Thailand. It still has only a few high-rise buildings and the people are more reserved, polite and traditionally Thai in their behaviour than Bangkok’s city slickers. Chiang Mai’s cultural richness is evident from the moment you arrive. It has beautiful temples spread out around the fortifications of the old city; and the city’s modern-day market places are an exciting blend of colourful lights, weird smells and excellent street food.
You can organize just about any sort of wilderness adventure you want in Chiang Mai. The popular tourist streets are lined with signs advertising everything from homestays in hilltribe villages to cave exploration. Most organized trips are either to the famous Golden Triangle area in the far north, or the Mae Hong Son region in the northwest. Both areas are spectacular in terms of their physical environment and both have their own distinct charm.
