Scuba Diving in South Africa

Duration: 09 Nights / 10 Days

Day 1
On your arrival in South Africa’s Mother City, Cape Town, you will be met and assisted by a Spectrum Tour registered tour guide. Transfer to the Waterfront City Lodge to freshen up. Lunch will be to your own account. Afterwards depart on a city tour of Cape Town. Time permitting, stops will include visits to:

· The City Centre

· The Company Gardens - the oldest gardens in South Africa, established in 1652 by Jan Van Riebeeck to supply fresh produce to passing ships.

· The Bo-Kaap Traditional Malay Quarter is brightly coloured and houses South Africa’s first mosque. · Table Mountain – a World Heritage Site and Cape Town’s most famous attraction, it is 1 086m above sea level (weather permitting).

Return to your hotel where you can refresh and relax before a complementary dinner from Spectrum Tour at a local restaurant. Overnight in a hotel near the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Flight booked by you. (B,D)

Day 2
06h00 pick up from your hotel. Transfer to Gaansbaai. Now becoming known as 'BIG-2-TOWN', and situated on Walker Bay, Gansbaai is a traditional fishing village with a harbour and spectacular views stretching along the coast to Cape Point. Miles of unspoiled beaches, fresh water caves and spectacular countryside covered in Fynbos make this an area of contrast and wonder. The drive will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. On your arrival in Gaansbaai just before 08h00 you will be able to enjoy breakfast. The boat leaves at 08h30 and will anchor in the Dyer Island area. The anchor site will be chosen according to the weather, sea conditions, season and previous shark sightings. Dyer Island is home to incredible marine bird life. Next to Dyer Island lies Geyser Rock, which houses a large colony of Cape Fur seals. The remains of old wrecks have found their way to rest on the 'The Rock'.

Between these islands lies 'Shark Alley', where the oceans greatest predator feeds. You may get the chance to see whales and dolphins as well. From 09h30 – 12h00 there will be White Shark observation and cage diving. The time of the first shark to appear cannot be guaranteed and varies from a few minutes to several hours. When a shark is spotted the crew first observe its behaviour. If the shark relaxes, then the cage and the divers can be lowered into the water. Snacks and drinks will be served on board throughout the trip. 12h30 - Return to Kleinbaai harbour. The remainder of the afternoon will be at your leisure to relax at your guest lodge which overlooks an unspoiled traditional fishing harbour. Watch the waves breaking on the rocks from the swimming pool, gaze at the panoramic views across Walker Bay to Hermanus and Cape Point or simply relax in your comfortable private suite. Dinner will be at the lodge where you will overnight. (B,D)

Day 3
Breakfast. Today will be at your leisure to relax in Gaansbaai. An additional shark cage dive can be arranged (to own account). After lunch in Gaansbaai, depart for Cape Town. On your return to Cape Town, you will be able to go up Signal Hill (spectacular views of Cape Town and Robben Island), dinner will be at your leisure (to own account). We suggest a visit to the Africa Cafe for a dinner of authentic African food. Overnight in a hotel near the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. (B,L)

Day 4
Breakfast. Morning departure for a full day Cape of Good Hope tour. Stops will include visits to:

· Simon’s Town and its historic statue of Able Seaman, Just Nuisance - a famous dog.

· Boulder’s Beach - 3000 strong African Penguin colony.

· Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point Nature Reserve – 7 750 hectares of reserve are home to indigenous flora (Fynbos is only found in Cape region) and fauna, including Baboon, Eland and over 150 species of bird including the biggest bird in the world, the Ostrich.

· Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens – known for its plant diversity.

A lunch stop will be en-route (drinks to own account). Time permitting, wine tasting can be done at Groot Constantia – the oldest South African wine estate and museum complex. The display includes Cape furniture, paintings and Chinese, Japanese and Delft ceramics. The Wine Museum exhibits storage and drinking vessels from antiquity to the early 20th century. Dinner will be at your leisure (to own account). Overnight in a hotel near the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. (B,L)

Day 5
Breakfast. Transfer to a dive school in Cape Town for 2-guided dives from a boat. The dive sites chosen for the dives will depend on the weather conditions and your personal preference. The Western seaboard of the Cape Peninsula is affected by the cold Benguela current moving up from the Antarctic towards the equator and influenced on the Eastern side (False Bay) by the warmer Agulhas / Mozambique current moving from the equator Southwards. The difference in sea temperature results in a marvelous diversity of marine life and scenery, offering the diver the best of both worlds. Access to two oceans - the Indian and the Atlantic - allows a tremendous range of diving experience to the keen scuba diver: seals, whales, penguins, dolphins and sharks; shipwrecks and reefs in 6 - 7 metres or at 40 metres plus.

The coast is a graveyard of shipwrecks, which met their fate off the “Cape of Storms”, and many fascinating wreck dives can be done by boat or from the shore. Dive through dense kelp forests and marvel at the spectacular reef life. Hard and soft cold-water corals in shades of pale pink, bright purple, red and orange are set off against a background of sulphur-yellow or bright orange sponges and bright blue, violet or pale green anemones. There are a variety of sensational diving experiences to be had on either side of our coast. Drinks will be provided during the day and a lunch break will be provided (to own account). Return to your hotel. Dinner will be at your leisure (to own account). Overnight in a hotel near the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. (B)

Day 6
Breakfast. Transfer to CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT for your flight to Richards Bay via Johannesburg. Flight booked by you.

Arrive RICHARDS BAY, meet & greet by a Spectrum Tour representative. Lunch will be en-route, (to own account). Transfer to Sodwana through the lush tropical bush of Kwa Zulu Natal – the dive sites along this coast have been compared to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Lying within the boundaries of The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, Sodwana Bay provides the traveling diver with a vast array of unspoilt coral reefs, populated with a huge diversity of Indo-Pacific fish and invertebrates including sharks and whale sharks (in season). Water temperatures range from 29 (mid Summer) to 19 (mid Winter) degrees C and the area is divable all year round. Average visibility is about 15 to 20m. Arrival time will be in mid to late afternoon. You will be staying at a PADI 5 star Gold Palm IDC Centre, in an en-suite wooden cabin. Dinner will be at the dive lodge. (B, D)

Day 7 & 8
Early morning dive to one of many dive sites on 2 Mile reef. This reef is about 2 km long and about 900m wide. The average depth of the reef is 14 – 16m deep with Deep Sponge being the deepest dive (28m+). Because of its size, 2 Mile offers something for everyone from massive amounts of fish, to wonderful invertebrates. There are plenty of caves and overhangs to explore. Return to the dive lodge for breakfast followed by a second dive to 2 mile. Depending on your diving qualifications dives can be arranged to further reefs for a minimal charge (to own account): 5 Mile – a deeper dive site, recommended for advanced divers.

Enjoy amazing coral diversity and see the shyer fish that live here. 7 Mile – a must for more advanced divers; this reef drops from 15m to 24m and is sheltered from the open ocean. 9 Mile – the most untouched reef, its deepest point being about 23m, this dive site boasts a huge outcrop of Green Tree Coral. Watch out for Dolphins on the way to the dive site. Relax in the afternoon on the unspoilt beach or take a walk to the craft market. The Zulu ladies are known for their weaving abilities and make the most beautiful baskets. Lunch will be to your account. Try a ripe, fresh pineapple cut perfectly by the ladies for easy eating. Dinner and overnight at the dive lodge. (B,D)

Day 9
Breakfast. Day at leisure with lunch to your own account. Relax at the pool, suntan on the beach or walk through the beautiful park area. Optional excursions can be arranged (to your own account). The area is covered with dense coastal forest offering exquisite scenery, bird watching, and a number of small mammals including Bush Babies, Genets, Duiker and striped mongoose. The Mgoboseleni Trail is a lovely, light hike taking about 1 to 2 hours that can be done from the campsite. Dinner and overnight at the dive lodge. (B, D)

Day 10
