Dubbed ‘the land of the hummingbird’, the unspoilt island of Tobago lies 20 miles northwest of Trininad and just 7 miles from Venezuela. Tobago really is a ‘step back’ in time truly non-commercialised and totally hassle free. The idyllic natural beauty makes it one of the greatest escapes in the Caribbean and ideal for those who like a generous dose of sand, sun and solitude. The island’s village-like capital and main port, Scarborough, lies the town the southern coast. Surrounded by mountains, its bay provides a scenic setting, but the town itself is rather plain. Tobago is renowned for its varied wildlife, excellent diving and also boasts many beautiful beaches with Pigeon Point and turtle Beach being two of the most popular. Go in late July and catch the Heritage Festival - two weeks of traditional festive fun or pop across Trinidad for the famous Carnival in Port of Spain.
